MERCS AND BIRTHDAYS

scout: june 28th, 11:15AM. cancer. big birthday guy. likes and expects a full showing of appreciation for the entire month that he is the birthday boy. forgets half the time that he shares the month with snipes, and it kind of annoys him that he has to share his birthday month with snipes, so he celebrates snipe’s birth month in may so he can have the month of june to himself. this has literally never worked. but the team will indulge him come the second. likes to pregame at the base and then barhop in town. birthday meal of choice is chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, no gravy and two fluffernutters a la mode, drizzled in caramel. a decadent dessert for the birthday boy.

soldier: july 3rd, 11:59PM. cancer. if he didn’t love his mother so much, he would hate her. she couldn’t hold him in for one more minute? just one? come ON, MOM. he was SO. CLOSE. to having the BEST BIRTHDAY IN THE WORLD. he is always the first person to fire off a firework for the fourth of july, and if anyone shoots off a firework before july 3rd, 11:59PM he will find and rob them bloody and blind. the team came to the decision to only tell soldier (and america) happy birthday at the same time, since he seems to take independence day much more seriously than his own birthday. he has corrected them before, and they have insisted so hard that he didn’t know his own birthday that he let himself believe it. he doesn’t even remember why he doesn’t like july third. so now he just robs people of their fireworks that day. soldier gets the best cuts of steak for his birthday, the coldest beer, and is always served first.

pyro: november 13th, 10:10PM. scorpio. pyro doesn’t want to hear happy birthday until 10:10PM, because that was when they were born. until then, it’s not their birthday! the next day, the whole team is going to chuck e. cheese. pyro will point at one of the items on the very top shelf, that costs fifty million tickets, and the team has two hours of unlimited play to get the amount of tickets needed to get that for their birthday. the team has found their own ways to do this, and they have never failed their objective. pyro will greatly enjoy the pizza and ice cream for their birthday, but if engie insists on cooking them a dinner on their actual birthday, they ask for rice and red beans. not canned beans, the kind that take all day to cook. the texan now knows that when pyro’s birthday is coming up he needs to start on the beans the day prior so they’re ready in time for dinner.

demo: october 12th, 9:41AM. libra. demo wants the day off. let him drink and sleep. he doesn’t want anything more than that. but the team will celebrate him anyway, because they know if he’s the only teammate that doesn’t get a party of some sort then he’s gonna be hurt by that; and they love tavish. love him enough to make him the booziest, gooiest rum cake with a scrumpy ganache potent enough to kill three elephants in an hour. and he gets the whole thing. nobody will even ask for a slice. but they’ll all stop by on his day off and tell him happy birthday. he’ll convince the entire team to “strike” for the day. it’s his birthday command, nobody will do anything for the entire 24 hours. as a matter of fact you will be banished to the battlefield if you dress up. dress in your nastiest clothes and go to bed.

heavy: august 18th, 2:37AM. he’s just a leo to me idk that’s my big guy and he gets whatever he wants for his birthday. and it changes every year. one year he demands nothing but a clean sweep on the battlefield. death is not an option. failure is not an option. give him everything you’ve got or catch his wrath. another year he just… disappears. comes up missing for a week or two. another year he wants to go on a hot air balloon ride and he wants the team with him; everyone on the same balloon. he’s never been on one before. another year he just locks the door to his room and reads. normally he is not very present for engie to make him anything that he could make confidently, so he defaults to chicken and dumplings and makes sure he has a hearty helping when he’s ready for it.

engineer: april 5th, 4:53PM. aries. oh it’s really party time. engineer learned if he wanted a party he liked he had to throw it himself, and everyone across both teams get an invite. whether they show up or not is on them, but he knows his team will be there. the blu sniper will always show up, and the blu engineer will always show up. it’s technically his birthday too, and he didn’t even have to plan the party. nobody has verbalized any issues with this, so that’s all fine, as far as engineer was concerned. the itinerary is as follows: everyone takes the day off. nobody on either team is to work. arrive in two outfits layered on top of each other. pregame from 9AM to 11AM. nobody except the designated drivers should be leaving there sober. depending on attendance, they will take up to three company vans to this bar about five hours out. ideally you arrive exactly at 4:30. park around the corner, ensure lack of cameras, get dinner, pregame again. hard. don’t worry about the drive, the restaurant engie chose is a walk away. dine and dash, be out by 5:43. move quickly, they’re racing the police force now. go to the bar. at this point he will loudly yell “it’s my birthday!” to an absolutely empty bar. somehow this will sway the bartender to give drinks on the house. get shitfaced. designated drivers are now lookout, so preferably a sniper and a scout. people who can get to the car quickly to get them out when the time comes. when the police sound to be three blocks away (scout knows what that sounds like) lay on the horn until everyone is in the car. head count. catch the stragglers. lead officers in a high speed chase on two separate highways. eliminate threats. get home unharmed. it’s fun for everyone but the designated drivers.

medic: february 15th, 12:02AM. aquarius. cupid missed him by two minutes and now the man dissects the things he loves. he shared his birthday with his father, so the doctor will normally just go home for it. he’ll be back on the 18th. he likes to spend it with his mother. they go have dinner, they drink, they catch up, they shop a little, he tells her about the team. and his mother is happy to spend it with him! she loves her little boy, and it doesn’t matter that his kill count is easily in the hundreds and he’s been a grown ass man for at least three decades, that’s her little baby boy and she will never say no to celebrating his birthday with him. they have a good time. she makes him a red velvet cake and they go to town on it. the absolute sloppiest you will ever see this man is on his birthday. guaranteed one fist fight if they go out for drinks.

sniper: june 1st, 5:53PM. gemini. he’s not used to it being hot during his birthday. chronic middle child. once scout registers that june is around the corner snipes will essentially get shafted when it comes to a birthday plan. but the team won’t let him forget it too much. he always finds it odd that they’re asking him what he wants to do that day until he checks the date. then he remembers “oh, right! it’s my birthday! i’m gonna take the day off”. engie brings him some pot brownies and he spends the day baking in his van. if he’s feeling social he’ll convince everyone to go to the lake with him.

spy: september 19th; 3:37AM. he’s a virgo because i said so. the team will buy him a bottle of wine and he sits in his smoking room with the door locked. nobody knows what he does in there on his birthday, just that sometimes they can hear his laughter past the door. so whatever he does, he’s certainly enjoying himself. takes it upon himself to cook the team dinner that night. salmon, asparagus, and gnocchi. nobody is allowed to help. makes an espresso martini with a small scoop of vanilla bean ice cream for dessert. goes to bed happy and tipsy, wakes up hungover the next day.

Since @british-hero and I went to the trouble to save Edward's siblings from scrap (aka, made OCs for some worldbuilding), I might as well reintroduce them to each other in all the AUs we have. Including the Railway Mimics AU.

With that said, the context behind this is: Abraham works for a railway in China and only recently got to come to Sodor for the express purpose of a partnership between his railway and the Sudrian railways (negotiations that are facilitated by his handler, Yinuo, who met the Fat Controller during Thomas's misguided attempt at seeing the world).

During his visit, he encounters a recently rescued Cavan who excitedly reintroduces Abe to their younger siblings. Of course, since the last time Abe saw Edward he was a rude little jerk, there's a bit of a disconnect... Ah well, Edward isn't the only one who's changed and Abe is nothing if not quick to get over his shock.

aro culture is not understanding what's so 'moral' about love, the partners disrespecting someone's boundaries but "oh, no, you dont get it! thats romantic! its cute!" or seeing families hurt each other because they 'love' each other and are 'trying their best'. i will never understand their emotional views, i consider it a blessing, everyone else seems to think its a curse. even other aros seem to fall into that trap, talking about platonic love to no end. friendship and family have no consent, but it is still deemed impolite to not put effort into something you dont care for. people have approached me asking if im their friend. i do not know them. i have never spoken to them. they still seem to get offended when i tell them no, i dont get why. people are so obsessed with romance, but friendship seems like something they only bring up when its to selfishly force others to be around them, to give them emotions and gratitude that cant be given, to act like treating them with anything less is a sin, and they pretend they have always cared. when i say i do not care for love, they dont seem to fully grasp that. i wont pretend for your comfort.

i just have been thinking about platonormativity and amatonormativity and how they are so widespread that even if one is removed it seems like the other gets louder.

learning to code!

When I was 9 years old, I learned enough html to code neopets pages, my own geocities websites, and I even made forums on my own sites so my friends could all roleplay together or rant together lol. And then? I forgot so much. I no longer no how to make a forum, or even a 'next page' button - so even the dream of just making a simple blog or webnovel site feels like a huge hurdle now. (9 year old me could probably figure it out in 2 hours).

So I'm relearning! I figured this would be a fun post to place resources I find for coding, since there's coding languages, and I figure maybe if you like running you're blog then you also might be interested in tools for making blogs!

First, for those of you who miss the old geocities and angelfire type of sites to make your own free site on: neocities.org

You can make free sites you can code yourself, the way 9 year old me did. A lot of people have made SUCH amazing sites, it's baffling my mind trying to figure out how they did, I definitely wish I could make an art portfolio site even a fourth as cool as some of the sites people have made on here.

And for those pressed for time, who aren't about to learn coding right now: wix.com is the place I recommend for building a site, it requires no coding skill and is fairly straightforward about adding pages or features by clicking buttons. I used it to make my art portfolio site, I am testing out using it for my webnovel - the alternative is Wordpress, but wix.com is letting me basically make a wordpress blog Inside my own site. It's very beginner friendly in terms of "how the fuck do I set up a 'sign up for updates' message and have my site actually email these people my novel updates?" and "I need a 4x20 grid of my art down the page, that lets people click the art to see it's information and make it bigger."

I did neocities.org's little html tutorial today, it's the part of html I DID remember (links, paragraphs, headers).

My next step is to go through htmldog.com's tutorials. They go from beginner, to intermediate, to CSS. Unlike many a coding tutorial I've seen, they explain what program on your computer you need to WRITE the code in and then how to save it and how to open it. (You'd think this isn't a big deal but I've been looking into how to learn Python for months and I can't find a tutorial explaining what fucking program to write my python in... notepad? do I need something else? I don't fucking know!! My dad finally gave me a printed textbook which supposedly tells you what to download to start... I learned C++ in college and for that you needed Visual Basic to code C++, so I figured I needed Something to Write the fucking python IN.)

"Poppet?" Phoenix asks uncertainly. They look scared.

"I'm sorry, I- I didn't mean, I-"

Phoenix squeezes their hand where they're still holding it. They understand why Poppet's scared, Abbie would punish them if they used their camouflage incorrectly or without permission, she doesn't like it, but Zera just thanked them, it was a good thing, they stopped them being injured. They're alright.

"Really, Poppet. Thank you. I could've been seriously hurt if it wasn't for you."

Poppet's looking a little green. More than a little, actually, and Zera's eyes widen at the same time as Phoenix realises. They port across the room, thrusting the bin under Poppet's mouth just in time.

Phoenix stands there uncertainly. They're not sure what they can do to help. They just know that Poppet is very scared and they don't like it.

"They, um, I don't think Foxfire is going to hurt you," they murmur. They know how unusual it is not to get hurt but Zera really doesn't seem like they will. They haven't so far anyway. Phoenix is still trying not to think about tomorrow and Abbie. "You're, um, you're okay."

"You're absolutely okay," Zera says, trying to sound as reassuring as possible. "I'm not going to hurt you. No one is going to hurt you."

They say the words to Bailey, but they mean it for both of them. Phoenix's words, how fast they came to the conclusion that Bailey was afraid of being hurt for using their powers, were scaring the shit out of Zera. Honestly, at this point? Zera thinks the other hero shouldn't be returned to their team until this is cleared up.

"I'm going to go get rid of this, and I'll be back in less than 30 seconds. Can you count that out for me?" Zera asks. Hopefully giving them a specific task will help keep them from spiraling further into panic. "Firebird, watch over them until I get back. Like I said, I'll be fast."

Zera has officially gotten past the point of being able to handle this solo. They are calling in backup.

They port out to the garage. They land in their designated spot, the area outlined with their signature bright blue. Dropping the trash can, they turn to the camera and start signing as they speak.

"Attention," they say, making the sign that will alert Iris's programs that she needs to look at this feed ASAP. "Backup needed in medbay. Send Tempest and Airmid soft-entrance. Postpone pickup for Firebird."

They make sure to use everyone's codename-signs rather than personal name-signs, emphasizing that this is a hero-related matter rather than any off-duty one, and specify a soft entrance so that, hopefully, the two heroes arriving wouldn't scare the twitchy patients any more than they already were. And while Zera doesn't technically have the authority to say Phoenix should stay with them for longer, Elijah and Maeve are both already a little worried with how the young hero is acting. Zera's input about what they've seen tonight will just be the icing on the cake.

They don't have time to explain in any more detail. They need to get back to the medbay before Phoenix and Bailey manage to— Zera didn't even know, but they definitely didn't want the two alone for any longer than necessary. They sign one last thing to the camera before porting back.

They put their right hand in a thumbs-up sign on top of their flattened left hand, and drag the whole sign towards themself.

Y'know, one of the odder things I see re Wyll is people claiming that him believing Mizora about Karlach being evil shows that he's too trusting or gullible or whatever. Not necessarily because he's not too trusting (see him immediately believing that all the Fists deserve to be pardoned for what they did during the game solely on the grounds that Ulder said so, despite everything we see of them in-game and despite Ulder openly admitting the god of justice himself wouldn't approve), but because... guys. Guys. We are told in no uncertain terms that the only reason Mizora could send Wyll after Karlach was that she is actually, literally heartless. I freely admit I'm not an expert on Forgotten Realms lore but I feel it is safe to assume that it's not exactly brimming with literally heartless people! I see a lot of people talking about the whole thing like Mizora used some deeply cunning loophole that she could have used in the past and could use in the future to trick Wyll into killing countless innocents, but like... no, I'm pretty sure it could only work on Karlach specifically. It would've been much more effective if Larian hadn't added the engine as a plot point and Karlach had remained just another victim of the events in Elturel (in which case Mizora would have had to use a loophole that she could use on others and it would have raised the question of how many innocent people Wyll had killed), and I suspect any dialogue suggesting any real likelihood of Wyll having killed innocent people on Mizora's orders in the past is left over from before the engine became a thing; in the final game it really is a complete non-issue, because how many literally heartless people can there actually be in Faerûn? We certainly never hear of any others in the game! It's just a little silly to act like Wyll proved himself to be overly trusting by not considering that Mizora might send him after an otherwise normal and decent mortal who literally did not have a heart. It's not about him trusting Mizora, it's about that not being something that any rational person would expect to happen.
